The Arroyo Dolores was a vibrant, year-round stream that once defined the landscape of this valley. Spanish explorers discovered the waterway on March 29, 1776, which happened to be the liturgical Friday of Sorrows, and named it Arroyo de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, or the Creek of Our Lady of Sorrows. The name eventually became the namesake for the famous mission nearby, which is still known today as Mission Dolores.
