Theatre of Yugen is a unique theatrical organization that brings the centuries-old traditions of Japanese Noh drama and Kyogen comedy to American audiences. Founded in 1978 by Yuriko Doi, the company was the first in the United States to commit itself exclusively to these classical forms. The performers study the rigorous, highly stylized techniques of movement, chanting, and mask work that have been passed down for over six hundred years. Instead of simply recreating ancient plays, the ensemble uses this traditional foundation to craft original works that often blend Japanese aesthetics with Western literature, mythology, and modern themes. By doing so, they explore the intangible concept of yugen, which refers to a profound, mysterious beauty that is felt rather than explicitly shown.
