During the frantic height of the Gold Rush, the harbor became so congested that crews abandoned their ships in the bay to sprint toward the gold fields. These vessels were left to rot until the city decided to repurpose the abandoned hulls. Merchants and developers dismantled the ships and transformed them into the foundations for banks, hotels, and offices, effectively burying pieces of the original maritime fleet beneath the city streets.
