Battery Howe-Wagner

Battery Howe-Wagner holds two distinct concrete gun platforms connected by a sunken ammunition gallery, carved directly into the bluffs above the Golden Gate. Built in eighteen ninety-nine, these emplacements once held six-inch rapid-fire guns designed to stop enemy ships from entering the bay. During the nineteen thirties, the army moved the heavy artillery to newer, more remote fortifications, leaving the battery to be stripped of its weaponry and abandoned to the salt air and the encroaching coastal scrub.
