San Francisco National Cemetery

The San Francisco National Cemetery holds the distinction of being the first national cemetery established on the Pacific Coast. When the United States Army took control of this land, they initially used it as a post cemetery, but in eighteen eighty-four, the War Department officially designated it as a national site. It now serves as the final resting place for thirty thousand service members and their families, set against a backdrop that overlooks the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge.
