Battery Lancaster

You are standing at Battery Lancaster, a site that once served as a critical guardian of the Golden Gate. Between the year nineteen hundred and the end of the First World War, this battery provided the only artillery coverage from the southern shore for the narrowest part of the harbor entrance. It housed three twelve-inch guns mounted on specialized disappearing carriages. These carriages allowed the massive weapons to fire over the concrete parapet and then drop back down into a protected pit, keeping both the artillery and the crew hidden from enemy ships during the reloading process.
