Earth Wall by Andy Goldsworthy

You are standing before Earth Wall, a striking installation by artist Andy Goldsworthy that seems to emerge directly from the ground beneath your feet. To create this piece, Goldsworthy first constructed a six-foot-wide half-sphere out of gnarled eucalyptus branches, all gathered from the surrounding Presidio forest. He then buried this wooden sphere inside a massive, structural wall made of rammed earth. Once the wall was fully compacted, the artist performed a deliberate, physical act of excavation, partially digging away the earth to reveal the sphere hidden within. This process was intended to mirror the archaeological work often happening at the Presidio, where layers of history are constantly being unearthed from the soil.
