Lodge at the Presidio

The building you see was constructed by the United States Army between 1895 and 1897. It served as a primary barracks for soldiers who resided on what was then called Infantry Row. This red brick structure was part of a major expansion that made the Presidio one of the five largest military posts in the country by the turn of the twentieth century. Before these permanent brick facilities were completed, soldiers stationed here lived in crowded, temporary wooden buildings dating back to the American Civil War.
