Golden gate viewpoint

The military actually fought against the creation of the Golden Gate Bridge for years. They feared a bridge spanning the strait would make the city significantly more vulnerable to attack. They argued that if the structure were damaged during a bombardment or an earthquake, the collapsed wreckage could block the entrance to the harbor and trap the entire Pacific Fleet inside the bay. It took decades of negotiation and planning before the United States Army finally granted permission to build the connection through the Presidio grounds.
