San Francisco Viewpoint

The Presidio of San Francisco spans over two centuries of military life, beginning in seventeen seventy-six when Spanish soldiers established a fort here to guard the Golden Gate. This site served as a strategic outpost for three different nations, shifting from Spanish to Mexican control before the United States Army took command in eighteen forty-six. Its long tenure as a military base meant that for generations, this land was restricted, with access limited to soldiers and their families. When the base finally closed in nineteen ninety-four, it transformed from a guarded military installation into a public national park, preserving a unique collection of architecture that ranges from historic adobe walls to industrial warehouses.
