Presidio

The Presidio began as a remote Spanish military outpost in seventeen seventy-six, serving as the northernmost edge of the Spanish Empire in the New World. Before European arrival, the Ohlone people lived here and gathered shellfish along the bayshore, leaving behind shell mounds that date back over a thousand years. This ground has transitioned through the control of three different nations, evolving from a small adobe fort into a critical military installation that anchored the defense of the American West for over a century.
