Kong Chow Sojourner Tombs

The Kong Chow Funerary Monument stands near the first fairway of the Lincoln Park Golf Course as the final physical reminder of a massive, long-forgotten burial ground. Between 1870 and 1898, the land beneath these manicured greens served as City Cemetery, the primary resting place for thousands of Chinese immigrants, as well as members of many other immigrant and indigent communities. The monument itself was once a vibrant chapel where families performed traditional rites, including burning incense and offering food to honor their ancestors. Today, it remains as a silent, weather-beaten stone structure, marking the spot where an estimated ten thousand people still lie beneath the turf.
