Coastal Trail

landmark

The Coastal Trail in Lincoln Park sits atop a layer of history that is literally beneath your feet. Before this was a scenic route for hikers and golfers, the entire area functioned as the Golden Gate Cemetery, which opened in 1868. By the time the city banned burials in the early twentieth century, nearly thirty thousand people had been interred here. While many remains were eventually relocated to nearby Colma, thousands of graves were never moved, leaving them resting undisturbed beneath the fairways and the hiking paths you are traveling today.
