Fort Miley

Fort Miley sits on a headland known as Point Lobos, where the United States Army once established a critical outer line of defense for the San Francisco Bay. Before the military arrived in the eighteen nineties, this entire area functioned as a massive burial ground called the Golden Gate Cemetery. When the government moved to build its artillery batteries here, officials claimed the remains were relocated, but later construction projects in the surrounding parkland have occasionally unearthed forgotten coffins, suggesting the transformation from graveyard to fortress was not as thorough as records once claimed.
