Dutch Windmill

The Dutch Windmill stands at the edge of the Pacific Ocean as a functional solution to a massive engineering challenge. When the park was first being developed, it was nothing more than a desert of shifting sand dunes. City officials faced a steep water bill from a local private utility company, so they turned to the wind to solve their problem. Completed in nineteen zero three, this structure harnessed the powerful coastal gusts to pump thousands of gallons of groundwater every hour into the park’s irrigation system. It succeeded so well that the park soon had a surplus of water, which it sold to nearby developing neighborhoods.
