Camera Obscura (San Francisco)

The building you are approaching is shaped like an oversized, vintage camera, a design choice meant to mimic the very device it houses. Constructed in 1946 by an inventor named Floyd Jennings, this structure was originally an attraction for the nearby Playland at the Beach amusement park. While the amusement park itself was demolished decades ago, this small, boxy building remains as the final vestige of that era. It serves as a rare, functional example of what is known as duck architecture, where a building’s exterior is crafted to literally represent the product or service offered inside.
