USS San Francisco Memorial

The USS San Francisco Memorial at Lands End features the actual bridge wings of the heavy cruiser that bore the city's name. During the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal on the night of November 13, 1942, the ship engaged in one of the most violent close-quarters naval fights in history. The heavy gauge steel you see before you was removed from the ship after she returned to port, left intentionally unrepaired to display the jagged shell holes and shrapnel scars earned during that brutal hour of combat.
