Battery Lobos

Battery Lobos was a specialized military installation constructed in the heat of nineteen forty-two to protect the entrance to San Francisco Bay. While many coastal defenses in the area date back to the turn of the century, this battery was built specifically for the Second World War as a rapid-fire station. It housed six-inch guns designed to defend against enemy ships attempting to clear underwater minefields placed outside the Golden Gate. Unlike the massive, older batteries nearby that used deep concrete pits, this site relied on steel shields to house its weaponry. The facility was deactivated by nineteen forty-five, leaving behind the reinforced concrete structures that remain as part of the Fort Miley military reservation today.
