You are standing at the western edge of what was once called the Main Street of the Nation. The Lincoln Highway was the first paved road to stretch across the entire United States, connecting Times Square in New York City to this spot in San Francisco. It began as a bold 1912 vision from Carl Fisher, an entrepreneur who wanted to prove that a transcontinental motor route could transform American commerce and travel. By 1913, the Lincoln Highway Association had formed to secure a continuous, toll-free path, eventually guiding travelers through fourteen states and over three thousand miles of changing American landscape.
