Legion of Honor

The Legion of Honor sits on a plot of land with a haunting past. Before the museum was constructed in the nineteen twenties, this site was home to the Golden Gate Cemetery. More than twenty-nine thousand people were buried here, including many in a potter's field and a dedicated Chinese burial ground. When the city closed the cemetery in nineteen zero nine, thousands of remains were left behind beneath the ground that now supports the museum's neoclassical wings.
