The structure you are looking at is a rare survivor of a lost era in San Francisco entertainment. Built in 1946 by businessman Floyd Jennings, this building was once a simple attraction connected to Playland at the Beach, a famous seaside amusement park that occupied this stretch of the coast until 1972. While the park itself is long gone, this small booth remains as the last piece of that history still standing in its original location. It is officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places, holding the distinction of being the only free-standing camera obscura in the United States that has never been moved from its original site.
