Roald Amundsen Memorial

The Roald Amundsen Memorial is a twelve-foot tall granite shaft, known as a bauta, that stands in the parking lot near the Beach Chalet at the edge of Golden Gate Park. This stone monument was donated by the local Norwegian community in nineteen thirty to honor the legendary polar explorer. It serves as a permanent anchor for a piece of maritime history that once occupied this very spot. For over sixty years, the small wooden ship Gjoa rested in a dry dock right here, having been gifted to the city after its historic three-year journey through the Northwest Passage. The ship was the first vessel to ever successfully navigate that treacherous Arctic route, and its arrival in San Francisco in nineteen zero six was met with massive citywide celebration. Although the ship itself was eventually returned to Norway in nineteen seventy-two to be restored, this stone memorial remains to mark the location where the pioneering vessel once welcomed visitors to the edge of the Pacific.
