The Cliff House

The Cliff House stands as a survivor of a remarkably volatile history, perched on a rugged headland where the land meets the Pacific. Its story began in eighteen sixty-three with a modest wood-frame structure that catered to the city's elite, who arrived by horse and carriage for panoramic ocean views. This early iteration eventually gained a notorious reputation for gambling and illicit activity before being purchased in eighteen eighty-three by Adolph Sutro, a self-made millionaire who sought to restore its prestige as a family-friendly destination. Sutro even extended a railroad line to the cliffs to ensure the general public could easily reach the site. Through fires, dynamite explosions from nearby shipwrecks, and shifting architectural styles, the building has been reimagined and rebuilt multiple times, serving as a constant witness to the wild, restless nature of the San Francisco coastline.
