You are approaching an area known as Vista Del Mar, a residential enclave that sits on the western edge of San Francisco, bordering the historic lands once held by the silver baron Adolph Sutro. The name itself is a literal promise of what the terrain offers, as it translates to view of the sea. This neighborhood originated as a planned residence park in the early nineteen thirties. During that time, developers aimed to create a garden-style community where homes were integrated into a park-like setting. One of the original model homes from the nineteen thirty-one launch still stands at the corner of forty-seventh Avenue and Geary Boulevard, where it retains the original crest of the development. While the grander vision for the residence park was curtailed by the economic pressures of the Great Depression, the area retains a distinct character shaped by its proximity to the rugged coastline and the former estate of the citys most famous benefactor.
