The United States Merchant Marine Hospital Cemetery holds the remains of over five hundred sailors from forty-three different countries. These men were merchant mariners who arrived at the port of San Francisco and died at the nearby Marine Hospital between eighteen eighty-one and nineteen twelve. Because most of these sailors were poor or had no family to claim them, they were buried in this quiet valley at the edge of the Presidio.
