Presidio Theatre Performing Arts

The Presidio Theatre was built in 1939 with funding from the federal Works Progress Administration to serve as the first dedicated movie house for soldiers and their families stationed at this post. Before its construction, personnel had to rely on makeshift outdoor screens or small, cramped rooms in the local YMCA to watch films. The theater was an architectural departure for the military, featuring a Spanish Colonial Revival style with wide, welcoming arches and intricate stucco work that helped it blend into the aesthetic of the surrounding Main Post.
