Battery Marcus Miller

historic

Battery Marcus Miller stands as a concrete sentinel from the Endicott Era, a period when the United States government undertook a massive overhaul of its coastal defenses. Construction began on this site in eighteen ninety-one, though the three massive ten-inch guns that once occupied these emplacements were not mounted until eighteen ninety-seven. These weapons featured a sophisticated disappearing carriage design, which allowed the heavy cannons to remain hidden behind thick concrete walls while being loaded, only rising above the parapet for a brief moment to fire before dropping back into safety.
