Anton LaVey, the founder of the Church of Satan, famously kept a full-grown African lion as a pet at his residence on California Street. Neighbors in the quiet Richmond District often recalled the jarring sight of the large cat riding in the back of LaVey's station wagon during errands. The animal eventually became too much for the neighborhood to tolerate due to its frequent, thunderous roars, leading to its relocation to a zoo and later a private farm. This creature was just one element of the house, which was also home to a collection of taxidermy, human skeletons, and occult-themed art that LaVey curated to craft a specific, macabre atmosphere.
