Cervantes Monument

The Cervantes Monument features the legendary knight Don Quixote and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, kneeling in bronze before a bust of their creator, Miguel de Cervantes. Sculpted by the artist Joseph Jacinto Mora and unveiled in September of 1916, the memorial was a gift to San Francisco from two prominent Spanish-born civil engineers, J. C. Cebrian and E. J. Molera. The figures are positioned so that their gaze meets the eyes of any observer standing before them, effectively inviting you into the scene. Mora, often called the Renaissance Man of the West, designed the pedestal to place the characters at a height where visitors naturally mirror their posture of respectful adoration.
