El Cid Statue

The bronze statue of El Cid standing on the lawn before the California Palace of the Legion of Honor is the work of American sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington. Completed in 1927, this equestrian monument depicts Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, an eleventh-century Castilian nobleman and military commander. The figure is shown with a stern expression, holding a lance and wearing a prominent crucifix, capturing the legendary persona of a knight who historically served both Christian and Moorish rulers. This sculpture arrived in San Francisco in 1929 as part of a wider exhibition of American art. It is one of several identical casts distributed globally, with versions located in New York City, Seville, Valencia, Buenos Aires, and San Diego. The presence of this specific statue in San Francisco reflects the work of the sculptor’s husband, Archer Milton Huntington, a scholar of Spanish history who founded the Hispanic Society of America and promoted Spanish cultural themes in public spaces across the United States.
