Battery Dynamite

Battery Dynamite is named for a peculiar and ultimately failed military experiment that took place here in the late nineteenth century. In eighteen eighty-eight, the United States Congress overruled the Army to authorize the purchase of experimental pneumatic dynamite guns. These weapons functioned like giant potato cannons, using compressed air to launch heavy charges of dynamite at targets out at sea.
