You are walking through a landscape that keeps a heavy secret beneath its manicured surface. While today it serves as a scenic municipal park, this land was once the Golden Gate Cemetery, a sprawling burial ground established in eighteen sixty-eight for the city's poor, immigrants, and those who died without family. Thousands of people remain resting in the ground beneath the golf course fairways and the art museum gardens because the city simply abandoned the effort to exhume and move the bodies when the cemetery closed at the turn of the twentieth century.
