The OA House

historic

The residence at 1001 Vallejo Street earned the nickname the House of the Grand Passion shortly after its construction in 1906. Its original owner, a wealthy railway and mining industrialist named Robert Hanson, commissioned the home specifically to house a romance he believed was the singular, all-consuming love of his life. He famously declared to his first wife that a man experiences such a passion only once, prompting a divorce so he could build this mansion for his new partner, Gabrielle Guittard Cavalsky of the famous chocolate-making family.
