American Indian Cultural District

The American Indian Cultural District stands as the first organization of its size in the United States dedicated to honoring and preserving the legacies of Indigenous people. Founded in March of 2020, it serves to combat the historical invisibility of Native communities within city government and public life. While its administrative hub is situated here at the Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture, the district itself encompasses a significant corridor in the Mission neighborhood. This area is historically significant as the traditional territory of the Ramaytush Ohlone people, and it later became a central gathering place for the urban Native community during the twentieth century. By establishing this district, the community secures a formal space to advocate for equitable resources and celebrate a culture that remains vibrant and present today.
