Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture

Before this site became a hub for galleries and performances, it served as the San Francisco Port of Embarkation, the primary gateway for American troops deploying to the Pacific theater during World War II. Over one and a half million soldiers walked these piers as their final point of departure from the United States. When the war ended, the flow reversed, and the facilities became the first place thousands of returning troops touched American soil again.
