The Coral Gables City Hall features a three-tiered clock tower that rises above the surrounding Mediterranean Revival rooftops. George Merrick, the city founder, hired architect Phineas Paist to design this building in nineteen twenty-eight, intending it to anchor his meticulously planned community. When the Great Depression hit shortly after construction, the city struggled to pay its debts. Merrick himself eventually lost much of his own fortune, and the municipality nearly went bankrupt while this building stood nearly empty for years.
