The bronze statue of Antonio Maceo stands at the corner of Southwest Eighth Street and Seventeenth Avenue, his sword drawn and pointed toward the horizon. Known as the Bronze Titan for his skin color and his legendary endurance in battle, Maceo led Cuban independence forces against Spain in the nineteenth century. He survived dozens of wounds before falling in combat. The monument serves as a rallying point for those who fled Cuba after the revolution, keeping his memory present in the neighborhood.
