Mixed Blood Theatre

The firehouse at the corner of Cedar and Riverside Avenue features a prominent brick bell tower that still holds its original iron bell. Built in eighteen eighty-five as Fire Station Number Eleven, the building served the neighborhood for decades before becoming the home of Mixed Blood Theatre in nineteen seventy-six. Founder Jack Reuler chose this space because he wanted a venue where plays could challenge social norms. The company stripped away the fire poles and bunkrooms, replacing them with a stage for diverse voices.
