The Pillsbury A Mill rises over the Mississippi River with a white limestone facade that glows in the afternoon sun. Completed in eighteen eighty-one, it operated as the largest flour mill in the world for over forty years. Charles Pillsbury powered his massive grinding wheels by dropping river water down a fifty-foot shaft inside. One day in eighteen seventy-eight, a spark ignited airborne flour dust, turning the previous structure into a bomb that leveled the building and killed eighteen workers.
