The Southern Theater

The Southern Theater features a distinct, weathered brick facade that rises above the sidewalks of Cedar Riverside. Built in nineteen ten, it served as a hub for Vaudeville performers and traveling troupes before transforming into a center for experimental dance and independent theater. In the nineteen eighties, the building faced demolition until local artists campaigned to save the structure. They stripped away the modern interior layers, revealing the original proscenium stage and the wood-framed balcony that still defines the space today.
