When Wilbur Foshay opened this building in nineteen twenty-nine, he invited thirty thousand people to the ceremony, including John Philip Sousa, who composed a march specifically for the occasion. Only months later, the Great Depression shattered Foshay’s empire, and he landed in Leavenworth prison for mail fraud. The tower remained a permanent marker of his ambition.
