The Hewing Hotel occupies a heavy timber and brick warehouse built in eighteen ninety-seven. Originally, this building served as a warehouse for the Janney, Semple, Hill and Company, a major wholesale hardware distributor that once fueled the growth of the Upper Midwest. The workers here moved everything from farm implements to kitchen stoves. Today, the lobby features the original, exposed pine columns and rough-hewn beams that defined the interior when thousands of crates moved through these floors every single day.
