The black exterior of First Avenue bears hundreds of painted white stars, each carrying the name of a performer who graced its stage. This building began as a Greyhound bus depot in nineteen thirty-seven before transforming into a nightclub in nineteen seventy. Prince filmed his breakthrough movie Purple Rain here, cementing the venue as the center of the local music scene. While many clubs closed as musical tastes shifted, this stage remained a consistent home for touring acts and emerging local talent.
