Site of Eldorado Amusement Park

Starting in eighteen ninety-one, this ground hosted a destination known as the Eldorado Amusement Park, which billed itself as the most beautiful amusement resort in the world. Rather than roller coasters or carnival rides, this fifteen-acre pleasure garden focused on architectural grandeur and spectacle. Visitors arrived from Manhattan and traveled one hundred and fifty feet up the cliffside from the Hudson River waterfront using a massive, custom-built elevator system. The park featured a Moorish-inspired casino, a castle perched on the edge of the Palisades, and a thirty-foot-high fountain that was considered the most expensive of its kind in America at the time.
