Weehawken Waterfront Pershing Circle

Pershing Road acts as a crucial link between the Hudson River waterfront and the top of the Palisades cliffs. It is named for John J. Pershing, the famous general who led the American Expeditionary Forces during World War One. For several decades in the early twentieth century, this route was a vital artery for the region, carrying both commuters on streetcars and travelers on the Lincoln Highway, which was the first road designed to span the entire United States. Before it bore the general's name, the road was known as Clifton Road, taking its title from a large private estate that once occupied the land along this steep escarpment.
