Chico Mendez Mural Garden

The Chico Mendez Mural Garden was a vibrant community oasis that once occupied the lots at five hundred nine through five hundred fifteen East 11th Street. Local artist Chico and sculptor Ken Hiratsuka transformed this site in 1991, turning a neglected, rubble-filled space into a green sanctuary. They named the garden in honor of Chico Mendes, the Brazilian rubber tapper and activist who gave his life to protect the Amazon rainforest. This connection to a global environmental hero reflected the grassroots spirit of the residents who cleared the debris to build a space for flowers, vegetables, and public art.
