La Plaza Cultural stands as a vibrant survivor of the nineteen seventies, a time when the surrounding neighborhood faced intense hardship and urban decay. Local residents and members of the community group Charas reclaimed what were then vacant, rubble-filled lots, hauling away tons of trash to transform the site into a green sanctuary. They did not work alone; they collaborated with the renowned architect Buckminster Fuller to construct a geodesic dome for cultural performances, turning the space into a hub for art and theater.
