Performance Space New York sits inside a former public elementary school building that was officially abandoned in the late nineteen seventies during a period of intense municipal financial crisis. At the time, the surrounding East Village neighborhood was struggling with high rates of vacancy, and this specific structure was effectively left to decay until local artists began reclaiming its classrooms as makeshift studios. By nineteen eighty, a group of performers and choreographers had transformed the site into a nonprofit arts hub, shifting the initials P. S. from public school to performance space.
