The Kitchen (art institution)

cultural

The Kitchen began in nineteen seventy-one as an artist collective founded by Steina and Woody Vasulka. They named the institution after its first home, which was literally the abandoned kitchen of the Mercer Arts Center in Greenwich Village. Frustrated by the lack of venues for experimental video, the founders turned this unconventional space into a hub for artists to screen works and share ideas. This makeshift start established a legacy of prioritizing artistic experimentation over polished, traditional gallery environments.
