Artists Space

Artists Space began in nineteen seventy two as a radical pilot project designed to break the barriers of the traditional art world. Founded by arts administrator Trudie Grace and critic Irving Sandler, the organization bypassed standard commercial gallery systems by allowing established artists to handpick their own lesser-known peers for exhibitions. This unique curatorial method gave emerging talent a platform that was completely independent of museum gatekeepers. By providing this structure, the space acted as a critical laboratory where artists could experiment with ideas that were often considered too provocative or unconventional for mainstream venues at the time.
